Marc Daniels, who hosts The Beat of Sports which airs from 9 AM to 11 AM weekdays on AM 1080 in Orlando, made his Kentucky Derby picks today.
His longshot to bet on is Musket Man at 21-1. His even longer shot to take a flier on is West Side Bernie, who could pay out as much as 30-1. (Though he did say that he thought Baffert's Pioneer of the Nile has the best chance of winning.)
I agree with Marc Daniels' philosophy of betting on the long shots in horse racing because one big win can cover multiple losses. The Coach has picked Derby's wrong for the past 9 years, but his 1998 pick of Real Quiet (8-1) and 1999 pick of Charismatic (30-1) still has kept in the black on Derby bets.
Inspired by his advice, I think I will put $10 on Musket and $2 on West Side. If either wins, I'll be thrilled. If neither wins, it will be an exciting--albeit disappointing--two minutes. The race begins Saturday at 6:24 PM on NBC.
